Summary: All the information you will need to know when travelling to Wales
Wales is the smallest of the countries that make up Great Britain, and is only 60 miles wide and 170 miles long. Surrounded on three sides by the sea, the Irish Sea to the north and northwest, St George’s Channel on the southwest and the Bristol Channel to the south, its only land border is with England in the east. In addition to mainland Wales, there are several islands, the largest of which is Anglesey to the northwest.
The west coast of Wales is noted for its two great bays, Caernarvon Bay in the north and the much larger Cardigan Bay. At the southern edge of Cardigan Bay, the coastline of Pembrokeshire extends into the sea, and is the most westerly point of Wales, and the closest to Ireland. Only the Cornish coastline in England reaches further west than this.
The coastline extends approx 750 miles. Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Cardigan Bay all have wonderful, clean beaches – the prestigious Blue Flag status has been given to 43 beaches in Wales. Oxwich Bay on the Gower Peninsula has been declared the most beautiful beach in the UK.
Wales is a country of hills and mountains, with peaks reaching over 2,000ft and 3,000ft, especially in the northwest region. Snowdonia at 3,560ft is the highest point in England and Wales. Further south in mid Wales are the Cambrian Mountains and further south again, The Brecon Beacons. The highest point in this range is Pen-y-Fan which rises over 2,970ft (886m).
With such a varied landscape and host of beaches, there are plenty of activities to choose from. Mountain biking with bike hire, rock climbing, mountain and hill walking, caving, canoeing, riding and even paragliding are just a few of the activities that can be found in the Brecon Beacons or The National Park in Snowdonia, which has some of the most varied rock climbing to be found in one place. With so many beaches, the water sports enthusiast is well catered for – swimming, surfing, body boarding, sea kayaking, windsurfing, power kiting, land boarding, buggying and more extreme sports like kite surfing. You could be on the beach every day and do something different!!
Wales has more than 150 golf clubs, some of which has hosted both national and international championships.
Known as the land of myths and legends – not to mention of Dragons! - Wales has countless prehistoric sites, ancient roman ruins, monumental land marks and churches to explore. There are 641 castles alone!
A holiday destination for families, couples, adrenaline junkies or those looking to just enjoy the fantastic scenery and beautiful clean beaches, Wales truly has it all.
