OVERVIEW: SPAIN
Spain is located in Southwest Europe, and occupies the greater part of the Iberian Peninsula which is shares with Portugal to the West. The only other land border is shared with France, and is separated from France by the Pyrenees mountain range.
Spain has an area of 195,363 sq miles (505,988 sq km) including the Balearic Islands found off the Southeast coast of Barcelona, and the Canary Islands, off the West cost of Africa. Spain has coastlines on the North Atlantic Ocean, the Bay of Biscay and of course the Mediterranean Sea. The geography of Spain is varied, the main physical feature being the vast central plateau, or Meseta, divided by several chains of sierras including the Sierra Nevada which rises to 11,411ft (3,478m) at the summit of Mulhacen, and is the highest point on the Spanish mainland.
Spain has been on the holidaymaker's list of destinations for decades; it is cheap and easy to get to, and as many of the low cost airlines operate routes across the country, the traditional ‘package holiday’ is no longer the restricting factor it once was. Consequently, Spain offers most everything for the tourist, from the classic beach holiday to the more exotic – trekking on horseback through the Pyrenees or off-road dirt biking in Andalucia, mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada or making a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, Spain has it all.
The Mediterranean coast extends 1,030 miles (1,660km) southwest from the French border to the Straits of Gibraltar, the narrow strip of water that links the Mediterranean with the Atlantic and separates Spain from Morocco and the African continent.
It goes without saying that water based activities feature highly on the list – swimming, surfing, sailing, snorkelling, scuba diving or windsurfing being just a fraction of what’s on offer.
The national and regional parks are perfect places to explore with plenty of hiking trails through the marshes and wetlands, over isolated mountain peaks or along the numerous coastal routes. Cycling and mountain biking are well catered for, with many of the old scenic railway tracks converted into cycle-way (Vias Verdes) the paths and tracks are plentiful. Jeep excursions are popular if you prefer to sightsee with less exertion!
The mountainous regions of the Sierra Nevada, Pyrenean and Cantabrian ranges provide plenty of opportunities for both climbing, hiking and of course skiing in the winter months.
With over 200 golf courses, Spain is a real Mecca for golfers. The Valderrama near Madrid is especially well known, while La Manga and the Costa del Sol are emerging as two of the premier golfing destinations.
No trip to Spain would be complete without joining in at least one of the famous festivals. From running with the bulls during the festival of San Fermin in Pamplona, or dancing the flamenco in Seville, there are plenty to choose from.
Visiting Spain is not only about sea, sand and sun, great cuisine, but also its people, rich monumental heritage and the awesome natural environment. A year round destination, Spain offers many different kinds of holiday experiences, the difficulty will be in limiting yourself to which ones to do!
