Summary: Information on holidays in Somerset

Somerset

Somerset is a county fairly bursting with history and legend, beautiful countryside, stunning beaches and rolling moorlands.

The perfect place for a holiday, whether it’s for a long weekend spent shopping in the Georgian city of Bath, or a week at one of the purpose built holiday camps on the coast, Somerset has plenty to offer.

Located in the South West of England, Somerset is home to three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty – the Mendip Hills, the Quantock Hills and the Blackdown Hills in addition to the Exmoor National Park. Minehead, on the edge of Exmoor is the largest seaside resort in Somerset and makes a perfect base for exploring the moors if you want a change from beach life!Somerset Views

Another popular holiday centre is Weston-Super-Mare, famous for its miles of golden sands, parks and gardens and the bright lights of amusements arcades. The Grand Pier was unfortunately destroyed by fire in July 2008, but plans are already underway to rebuild a new pavilion, which is expected to open in 2010.

Away from the beaches and coast, Somerset has much more to offer, from the county town of Taunton, where the largest cattle markets in the country are held, to the small market town of Glastonbury. Famous long before the annual music festival, Glastonbury Abbey, set in 37 acres of parkland is still a major visitor attraction. Nearby, the City of Wells has some of the best medieval buildings including the cathedral which has been described as one of the best medieval buildings in England.

The small town of Cheddar is home to Britains largest and very unique gorge, Cheddar Gorge, where you can venture underground to see where Britains oldest skeleton, known as Cheddar Man was found. The caves are even now used to mature real Cheddar cheese!

So whether you wish to spend your holiday in more leisurely pursuits around the beautiful beaches, visiting some of the museums or country houses, or are more of a thrillseeker and wish to engage in mountain biking, caving, rock climbing, hiking and exploring, riding or sampling local fare – Somerset offers a wide variety of activities from which to choose.
