OVERVIEW: JAMAICA
The third-largest island in the Caribbean, Jamaica is one of the most colourful. Perfect beaches with white sand, forests full of vibrant tropical blooms all against a backdrop of blue mountain peaks.
With an area of 4,244 sq miles (10,911 sq km) the terrain of Jamaica is largely mountainous, descending to the West in a series of forested ravines and ridges. The highest point is the Blue Mountain Peak, reaching 7,402ft (2,256m) in the East. At its greatest extent, Jamaica is 235km (146 miles) long and varies between 22 and 51 miles (35 and 82 km) wide. The finest beaches are found to the North and West, and with over 621 miles (1,000km) of coastline the beaches are plentiful.
Renowned as the adopted home of the Rasta and the birthplace of Bob Marley, Music is inherent to Jamaica, be it roots, rock, reggae or reggaeton. Reggae remains at the island's musical heart. The Bob Marley Museum in the capital city, Kingston celebrates the musical heritage and African roots of Jamaica.
Jamaica is an increasingly popular destination for couples to marry - almost 50% of all weddings in Jamaica
are those of visitors, combining a holiday with exchanging their vows. It is possible to marry on the beach or in one of the many hotels that now cater for this most memorable of days. There are several ‘couple only’ resorts that have their own specialist wedding coordinators to help with all the planning, leaving the bride and groom free to relax and enjoy island life.
And despite its reputation as a laid back destination, there is certainly plenty to keep visitors occupied!
Climbing and hiking trails rise to heights above 2,100m (7,000ft) in the Blue Mountains, home to more than 200 species of birds and over 800 species of plants. Hire a bike and cycle downhill through a forest of stunted soapwood and redwood trees, through the world famous Blue Mountain coffee plantations or just meander along hedgerow-flanked lanes and explore the hundreds of paths connecting villages around the mountains.
If the thought of all that exercise wears you out, hop aboard a bamboo raft to explore the Rio Grande for a thrilling trip through banana and sugar cane plantations. Leaving from the peaks of the Blue Mountains at Berrydale, sail along one of Jamaica’s largest rivers winding down to Margaret's Bay.
After a full day tiring yourself out, try a rejuvenating dip in the curative waters of the Milk River Spa, a naturally radioactive mineral bath. Discovered in 1794, these spring-fed therapeutic waters reach temperatures of 33°C (86°F) and will ease the most persistent of aches and pains!
Hiking, camping, diving, golfing, snorkeling, horse back riding, backpacking, swimming, jet skiing, or just chilling out Jamaican style, there is something for everyone – singles, couples and families – to do on this beautiful island.
