OVERVIEW: ITALY

The long peninsula of Italy sticks out into the Mediterranean Sea and looks rather like a boot. With an area of 116,346 sq miles (301,338 sq km) Italy is approx twice the size of England and Wales. Joined to the European mainland in the North, the Alps separate Italy from Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia and France.

The Alpine region is home to the resort of Courmayeur in the summer months it is a wonderful base for walking, cycling and climbing, and of course skiing during the winter. Corinta D’Ampezzo in the Dolomites has the most dramatic scenery surrounded by the most stunning craggy red rock Dolomite Mountains and forests. Renowned for its great skiing and style, the area provides plenty of scope for all ski abilities. For après ski activities choose from sleigh rides, curling or just soaking up the winter sun. Linger over lunch and sample the tasty local cuisine in one of Cortina’s 50 mountain restaurants.

As a peninsula, Italy has many good, safe family beaches where all types of watersports are available. Popular spots include Liguria in the Italian Riviera and the Adriatic and Amalfi coasts. Sicily off the southern coast has large sandy stretches and the beaches tend to be less busy. Sardinia has a reputation of having the best dive sites.

Historical sites abound, Italy has the greatest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites - art and monuments are everywhere around the country.

The capital city of Rome includes such historic sights as the ancient Forum, the Pantheon and the Colosseum. Compact enough to visit in three days, a trip to the Trevi Fountain is a must, where visitors can throw coins into the water to guarantee their return to Rome perhaps for a longer stay next time.

Venice situated on the Adriatic coast is a city so unique, there is not another like it in the world. Built on 117 small islands, and covering an area of approx 458 kms, Venice has 150 canals, linked by an amazing 409 bridges, including the famous Bridge of Sighs. Only three of these canals cross the main canal. The city can be explored on foot on one of several walking tours or take a gondola ride along the Grand Canal whilst being serenaded as you glide along.

There are many opportunities to combine a holiday with learning a new skill. Language and art courses are available throughout Italy; cooking and even wine tasting courses are available in other regions.
