OVERVIEW: GREECE

Part of Southern Europe, Greece is found on the southern most tip of the Balkan peninsula, and possesses an archipelago of some 2,000 islands in the Mediterranean, Aegean and Ionian Seas.

With an overall area of 50,949 sq miles (131,957 sq km), these islands account for approx one fifth of the land area. Land borders are shared with Albania, Macedonia and Bulgaria to the North, and Turkey to the North East. The Greek mainland is almost split in two by the Gulf of Corinthia – the Southern half is also referred to as The Peloponnese Islands.

The majority of the islands are located in the Aegean Sea between the Greek and Turkish coasts. The Ionian Islands are the exception; they are scattered along the west coast in the Ionian Sea.

It goes without saying that water based activities feature highly on the list – swimming, surfing, sailing, snorkeling, scuba diving or windsurfing being just a fraction of what’s on offer across Greece. For those who prefer to just relax on the beach try Naxos for its long stretch of un-spoilt sand or the white pebble beach of Lalaria on Skiathos. Sunset

Island hopping is increasingly popular and for the more experienced sailor a charter boat or live-aboard is a wonderful way to experience some of the uninhabited islands and find that deserted cove that seems to appear in every publicity shot about Greece.

Mainland Greece, often overlooked by tourists, is rich in historical sights, many of which are concentrated in the central and southern areas. Walking, hiking, cycling and even rafting, kayaking and canoeing along the fast flowing rivers of mainland Greece – all are well catered for. Mount Pasnassos is perfect for climbing through the summer months, and is also one of the top ski resorts in Greece, a fact many people are surprised by!

If you prefer a little pampering, there are many spas and hydrotherapy centres which have developed throughout the country around some of the many thermal or mineral springs.

With such a wide diversity of islands to choose from it would take several lifetimes of holidays or short breaks to discover all that is on offer.

If you would like to email with any of your experiences of this country we would be very pleased to publish your thoughts. Click here
