OVERVIEW: GERMANY

Germany is a country in Central Europe and shares borders to the north with Denmark, Poland and the Czech Republic to the east, Switzerland and Austria to the south and to the west by France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands.

The northwest of the country has a coastline on the North Sea with islands known for their health resorts, while the Baltic coastline in the northeast stretches from the Danish to the Polish border. The landscape along the North sea coastline is very flat, and although the climate is generally mild and humid, this area is susceptible to lots of rain and rather chilly temperatures.
The North Sea islands just off the coast are very picturesque, and are mostly visited by the Germans themselves. Out in the German Bight lies the country's only off-shore island, Helgoland. Thanks to the strong winds, Wind-Surfing is possible all year round

Covering an area of 137,819 sq miles (357,045 sq km ), Germany boasts a variety of different landscapes with a large part covered by forest.

While they are much smaller now than they used to be in times gone by they are still huge compared to forests in other European countries and sparsely populated. The famous Black Forest has been declared national heritage and will eventually return to a wild state.
Walking and hiking in these woods and forests is a popular pastime with visitors and Germans alike, with space enough for everyone to get lost.

The middle half of Germany is known as "Mittelgebirge": Hilly rural areas where fields and forests intermix with larger cities. Many of these areas are tourist destinations, including the Bavarian Forest, the Black Forest, the Harz, the Ore Mountains and Elbsandstone Mountains and in the very south, Germany contains a small portion of the Alps, rising as high as 12,000 ft (4000m) above sea level. The highest summit in Germany is the Zugspitze, at 9,717 ft (2962m).
While only a small part of the Alps are famous for their beauty and the unique Bavarian culture found in Germany a lot of people go there or further south into neighboring Austria and Switzerland for skiing in the winter and hiking and climbing in the summer.

Wherever one travels in Germany, there is something interesting to see or do. It is a goldmine for the adventurous tourist in search of something different to do whilst on their holiday.
