Summary: Gap Year Travel - Who says it's just for students!
Gap year travel used to be the domain of the young – students taking time out either before they begin their University course or those that have completed their further education and want to see a bit of the world before they knuckle down to life in the working environment.
Things have certainly changed though; the number of older people taking time out of their normal working life has increased dramatically over the last few years. A career break or sabbatical is becoming more common in the 30 something age group who have less funding issues than the average teenager.
Another group that has come to the fore are the over fifties and retirees. Often referred to as ‘Grey’ or ‘Golden Gappers’, this is something of a misnomer as you do not have to be grey to qualify! It refers more to the fact that these travellers are just as likely to be established individuals, who can afford to take time out as opposed to a retired person with itchy feet! This group are often inspired by their children who have flown the nest, and rather than sit at home, take the long haul trips not always possible previously.
Even ‘gap year’ is a term that has changed over time. The length of time taken for travel can be virtually anything nowadays, although perhaps a two week break would be perhaps stretching the phrase a little too far!
Another change that has come about is perhaps a little more subtle. Historically, gap years have been spent in a more altruistic way by staying with communities in less developed countries to give physical help with a community project, passing on skills to local people, maybe teaching English to children or even working with endangered species. These days gappers are just as likely to be travelling for their own enjoyment, perhaps for an adrenaline filled adventure or a round the world trip.
Taking time out of the normal daily routine for whatever reason has never been more popular, and the opportunities available are immense.
So, whatever your age, income, tastes or reasons, it’s never too late to kick over the traces and go for it!
