OVERVIEW: ENGLAND

England takes up more than half of the island of Great Britain, with Scotland to the North and Wales to the West. The East coast is on the North Sea, whilst to the Northwest, England is separated from Ireland by the Irish Sea. The southwest coast of Cornwall is in the Atlantic, and to the South, France, separated by the English Channel. Narrow in the North, England widens to the South to a distance of some 300 miles at its widest point, the north foreland of Kent to Land’s End in Cornwall. The greatest distance from North to South is approx 350 miles.

England is a small country with a varied landscape, from mountains to moors, forest and farmland. To the East, it is relatively flat with fertile plains and gentle rolling hills. Mountains and steeper hills are found to the North West, where the highest point is Scafell Pike (3,210 ft) in the Lake District (Cumbria). The Pennines divide the Lake District from the Yorkshire Dales. In the Southwest, Dartmoor has heights of over 2,000ft and parts of Exmoor and Bodmin Moor also reach over 1,500ft. The coast line stretches over 1800 miles, and varies from steep cliffs and rocky coves to long stretches of sandy beaches.

There are literally hundreds of miles of walking and hiking trails – the Pennine way stretches some 270 miles from the town of Edale northwards to the Scottish Borders. Or try the national trail along Hadrians Wall, 84 miles through stunning scenery. The South West Coastal path takes in an altogether different scenic route and runs from Minehead in Somerset, across North Devon, round Cornwall and along the Devon and Dorset coasts to Poole. At over 630 miles, it is the longest national trail in England.

All manner of holidays and breaks are available – from weekends in the city to catch a show and visit a museum or two, or just taking a relaxing spa break in a country house hotel, camping, caravanning, 5* hotels or country B & Bs, the choice is unlimited!

London needs little introduction as the capital city, and is packed with enough historical sights, museums, churches and galleries to satisfy the most ardent of culture seekers. Take a river boat ride along the Thames past the Houses of Parliament or the Tower of London and pass under some of the most famous bridges in the world. The changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace is definitely worth seeing, or if Royalty is your thing, take the train to Windsor where you can spend the day wandering round Windsor Castle, one of the Queen’s official residences.

Liverpool, European Capital of Culture 2008, and the birthplace of the Beatles is equally famous for its maritime heritage spanning more than 1,000 years. The waterfront has been declared a World Heritage Site; such is the importance of this commercial port, which played a significant role at the time of Britain's greatest global influence.

With the advent of cheap package tours, England is often overlooked as a holiday destination by the British. However with a huge number of ancient sites such as Stonehenge to 21st century attractions such as the London Eye, there is plenty to do and see, all without the hassle of flying!
