Overview: Bulgaria

Bulgaria is situated in the southeastern corner of Europe, and occupies the northeastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. The River Danube forms a natural border with Romania to the North; to the West are the Republic of Macedonia and Serbia and Montenegro, Greece to the South, and Turkey to the Southeast. Bulgaria borders the Black Sea to the East, with a coast line that extends over 236 miles (378 km's).

With an area of 42,818 sq miles (110,993 sq km's), the terrain varies from large plains, lowlands and hilly regions to the mountains of the Balkans and Rhodopes ranges.

The capital city, Sofia is the hub of business and cultural life. There are museums, art galleries and historical buildings to satisfy the cultural side of life, and jazz or rock clubs for those who enjoy a more lively evening.

The Black Sea coast is popular with locals and tourists alike. With clean, clear waters, wide sandy beaches and even underwater caves to explore, water based activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing are catered for in many of the resort style centres scattered along the coastline.

Bulgaria is a popular winter sports destination, with skiing and snowboarding catered for in several areas. Bansko is Bulgaria's top ski resort, having the best and most modern ski centre of all the Bulgarian ski resorts. Borovets is the oldest and has been a winter resort for over 100 years!

Whether you prefer to spend your time sunbathing on one of the fabulous beaches of the Black Sea coast, or skiing down the snow covered slopes, Bulgaria is a place for both families and couples alike.
