Overview: Belgium

Wedged between France to the Southwest, Germany and Luxembourg to the East and the Netherlands to the North, Belgium lies at the crossroads of Western Europe. In fact the majority of the capital cities of Western Europe lie within 1000km of Brussels, the seat of both the European Union and NATO.

Belgium has a coast line to the North Sea of approx 66.5km, and an area of 30,528sq km. From flat coastal plains in the Northwest, the rolling hills of the centre, to the rugged mountains of the Ardennes Forest in the South East, the countryside is diverse and perhaps a little more interesting than one might imagine. Belgium is divided into 3 main regions: Flanders, Wallonia and the capital region of Brussels.

Although many people would not see it as a place to visit in its own right, Belgium has a number of interesting places to visit for its history, museums and excellent cuisine.

There is much more to the capital city of Brussels than its place as the centre of the EU.  From the Gothic and Classical architecture of the city's churches and palaces, to the Museum of Chocolate and the world famous Manneken-Pis, Brussels is a charming town that is quite popular with most travelers.

The Old Town area in the city of Bruges has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered by some to be the Venice of the North. Once a leading trading centre in Europe, the city is perfect for walking and boating and has some wonderful museums that are well worth a visit.
While Belgium's tourist destinations are not the "best of the best", they are satisfying and worth a visit perhaps as an add-on to holidays involving trips Germany or France.
