Summary: A Look at Some of Britain's Beauty spots - Tattershall Castle in Lincolnshire

Beautiful Britain – Tattershall Castle

Located in Lincolnshire, the red brick appearance of Tattershall Castle is a masterpiece of English brickwork dating back to the 15th Century. Rising some 110ft above the surrounding countryside, the six storey Great Tower is constructed of over a million bricks, and is one of the most important surviving 15th century brick castles in England.

The Great Tower was designed and built by Ralph Cromwell, who as lord Treasurer of England was one of the most powerful men in the country. The castle has had a remarkable history since its completion, making its survival even more remarkable. After losing its defences in 1693 following the Civil War, the castle declined even further over the next two hundred years. The twin moats were filled in and the grounds were incorporated into a local farm. The castle was even used at one time to house cattle!

Threatened with demolition in the early 20th Century, the castle was destined to be sold piecemeal as architectural salvage. Some of the fireplaces were removed and sold, which caused public outrage. The castle was bought by Lord Curzon in 1911 after he became aware of its plight. He was successful in locating the fireplaces and had them returned to the castle the following year.

Lord Curzon funded the repair work to the castle and with his drive and imagination, the castle was restored to its former glory. The moats were excavated, battlements reconstructed, windows and floors replaced and the tower restored. The castle was opened to the public in 1914, and bequeathed to the National Trust on the death of Lord Curzon in 1925.

Today you can explore all six floors of this great castle and climb the 150 steps from the basement to the top of the battlements where the fine views provide ample reward for your hard work. On a clear day it is possible to see Lincoln Cathedral and St Botolph’s church – also known as the ‘Boston Stump’ – the highest church tower in England.

Walk around the grounds and see the bridges that span the moats. The grounds provide a perfect and dramatic background to a well earned picnic!
